Valentine is the main antagonist of the first half of the series, and is the former husband of Jocelyn Fairchild and father of Clary. He is a very skilled
Shadowhunter and together he and his group of young Shadowhunters formed the infamous group known as the Circle. He was pure at first before he planned to
kill all downworlders. He gets turned in and upon fleeing the battle, Valentine is assumed to be dead and goes into hiding with his son. Years later He kidnaps
Jocelyn for information but his plans fail.
Eventually his fate is sealed.
Jocelyn is a Shadowhunter and used to be married to Valentine. Jocelyn left Valentine with Clary and had Magnus Bane cast a block on her to protect her from the Shadow world. In City of Bones she put herself into a coma so Valentine wouldn't try to force her to reveal the whereabouts of the Mortal Cup. Her life is continued in the books.

Luke is a former Shadowhunter and a former member of the circle. Later, when he is betrayed by Valentine and is bitten by a werewolf, he succumbs to lycanthropy, thus becoming a werewolf himself. He is currently the leader of the Manhattan werewolf pack, and is love with Jocelyn Fairchild and acts like a father to Clary. He is described as calm, level-headed and righteous. He is also fiercely loyal to his loved ones.
Maia is a biracial teenager born and raised in a New Jersey suburban neighborhood. In tenth-eleventh grade, Maia met Jordan Kyle and they began dating. He soon began to become controlling and abusive and she broke up with him. He became enraged at her break up with him and, in werewolf form, attacked her on her way home from a party. Maia soon turned into a werewolf and became good friends with Luke. She was involved in a love triangle but is currently not dating anyone.
Jordan Kyle is a male werewolf and the boyfriend of Maia Roberts. He turned her into a werewolf. He was a member of the Praetor Lupus and, as praetor, was been tasked to watch over the fledgling "Daylighter", Simon Lewis. He then becomes part of the friend group and helps them fight villians.
Clary is the daughter of Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fairchild. She is described as having long, curly red hair and bright green eyes. In the first book, City of Bones, she believes she is a mundane, or a human without powers. It is later revealed she is in fact a Shadowhunter. Clary is very stubborn and often rushes into dangerous situations without thinking. Her best friend in the series is Simon Lewis and she likes Jace, who is rumored to be her brother. Soon it is revealed that she can read ancient runes and create her own runes.
Jace is described as being tall and muscular with scars across his golden skin from worn-out Runes. He has wavy blond hair and golden eyes, and, like Clary, he is a Shadowhunter. Jace is often flirty and insensitive, and is described to have "pretend" arrogance due to his belief that he isn't good enough. Throughout the books, Jace's family remains unknown though he often refers to the Lightwoods as his family. Throughout the books his true identity is revealed But he decides to take the last name of his adoptive family, the Lightwoods.
Simon is a thin, tall boy with a mop of brown hair, brown eyes and glasses. He is often seen wearing T-shirts with gamer slogans. Simon describes himself as being "hipster" but his best friend, Clary, tells him he is a geek. Simon is quirky and caring, often putting other people before himself. Simon ends up in a love triange but eventually chooses. He is currently dating that character.
Alec is the oldest Lightwood sibling. Alec is a Shadowhunter with floppy black hair and blue eyes. He is described as being quiet but protective of his younger siblings: Isabelle and Max. Alec believes he is in love with one character until he meets Magnus Bane later on. In City of Glass, Alec confirms that he is homosexual. His and Magnus' relationship is fragile due to Magnus' immortality.
Magnus is the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Magnus is an age-is-kinda-fuzzy-but-somewhere-around-800-year-old warlock who appears 19. He is tall and thin with Asian features, jet black hair, and amber and green cat eyes. Magnus Bane is often described to wear glitter and throws countless parties with Shadowhunters and downworlders. Magnus begins a relationship with Alec Lightwood, therefore he feels obliged to become the New York Shadowhunters' "pet" warlock in order to impress Alec. Magnus appears in the prequel to The Mortal Instruments—The Infernal Devices and The Bane Chronicles.
Isabelle is a Shadowhunter and is described as tall, thin, and beautiful. She has long black hair and dark brown eyes, and is often carrying her trademark gold electrum whip. Isabelle is described as being incredibly girly but with a fierce attitude. She is often considered flirty and never seems committed with relationships, although in City of Lost Souls, she admits to being in love with Simon Lewis.
